$16.3M USD per molecule · top concentrated supplier 2024 · 20 molecules shipped to a single destination on a $326M book
$16.3M · PharmaGraph catalog Indicative

The most concentrated active supplier on the 2024 book ran $16.3M per molecule across just 20 molecules to a single destination on a $326M book. Serum Institute by contrast spreads $300M across 57 molecules and 134 destinations, a clear resilience advantage. Granules ($157.7M / 34 molecules / 69 destinations) and Centrient Spain ($104M / 25 molecules / 57 destinations) sit between the two postures. The brief flags suppliers above $3M per molecule as concentration candidates worth a contingency-supply check.

Save the resilience brief.

Citation-anchored brief with the concentrated suppliers ranked first, and a recommended contingency-supply check for any supplier above the depth threshold.

Why a procurement lead runs it

Supplier resilience, sized.

Three signals, one score.

USD per molecule, molecule breadth, and destination spread. The composite reads supplier fragility better than any single dimension.

Concentrated suppliers flagged.

A supplier doing $300M but in 20 molecules to one destination is operationally fragile. The brief flags them so the contingency-supply check fires before a market shift breaks the model.

Buyer-side dependency.

Where you source 60%+ of your portfolio from a supplier scoring under 30 on the breadth axis, you carry their fragility. The brief surfaces the cross-dependency.

Auto-trigger contingency.

Suppliers above the depth threshold and below the breadth threshold trigger the dual-source or alternate-origin workflow with parameters pre-filled.

Eleven active suppliers cleared the $3M-per-molecule concentration threshold in 2024. PT Aero Pacific tops the list at $16.3M per molecule on just 20 molecules to a single destination, the textbook profile of an operationally-fragile supplier. PT Organon Indonesia and Serum Institute follow at $5-6M per molecule, but Serum balances the depth with 134 destinations and a polio/measles vaccine portfolio that diversifies the risk. The brief flags fingolimod's primary suppliers as moderately diversified, which is consistent with the molecule's 19 active US DMFs and broad export footprint.

The supplier-portfolio view is the resilience score for sourcing. PharmaDB computes USD per molecule, molecule breadth, and destination spread for every active exporter, surfaces the concentrated ones, and routes them into the contingency-supply workflow. FAQ

Frequently asked

What is USD per molecule?+

Total declared export value divided by distinct molecule count for the supplier in the shipment year. A high value means the supplier ships a lot of dollars on few molecules; a low value means broader portfolio per dollar.

Why is concentration a fragility signal?+

A supplier with $300M on 20 molecules to one destination is exposed to single-market regulatory or tender changes. A supplier with the same dollars across 60 molecules and 100 destinations absorbs the same shocks more easily. The breadth score captures the difference.

How does this differ from buyer-concentration risk?+

Buyer concentration measures dependency on a single buyer; supplier portfolio concentration measures portfolio breadth of the supplier itself. The two run in parallel as different fragility axes.

What threshold triggers a contingency check?+

PharmaDB's default is $3M per molecule combined with destination count under 20. Both tunable. Above the threshold, the supplier surfaces as a contingency candidate; below it the supplier is treated as resilient.

Does the analysis cover specialty CMOs?+

Yes. Specialty CMOs typically score concentrated by design (few molecules, deep capability). The brief notes the specialty-CMO designation so the fragility flag reads correctly as a strategic concentration rather than an unintended one.

How fresh is the data?+

Trade aggregates refresh weekly. Supplier-portfolio metrics recompute on every refresh. The catalog row carries the last-computed timestamp surfaced on every result page.
